BASIC & INTERMEDIATE:
WERQ— Basic, Intermediate, WERQ® is the fiercely fun dance fitness class based on top 40 pop, rock, and hip hop music taught by Certified Fitness Professional.
Zumba®— Basic, Intermediate, Zumba® involves dance and aerobic elements. Zumba’s® choreography incorporates hip-hop, soca, samba, salsa, merengue, mambo and martial arts.
BASIC, INTERMEDIATE & ADVANCED:
Yoga— Basic, Intermediate, Advanced. A Hindu spiritual and ascetic discipline, a part of which, including breath control, simple meditation, and the adoption of specific bodily postures, is widely practiced for health and relaxation. Yoga focuses on physical and mental strength building exercises and postures.
Pilates— Basic, Intermediate, Advanced. A system of exercises using special apparatus, designed to improve physical strength, flexibility, and posture, and enhance mental awareness.
Strength— Basic, Intermediate, Advanced. A type of physical exercise specializing in the use of resistance to induce muscular contraction which builds the strength, anaerobic endurance, & size of skeletal muscles.
Resist-a-ball— Basic, Intermediate, Advanced. A primary benefit of exercising with an exercise ball as opposed to exercising directly on a hard flat surface is that the body responds to the instability of the ball to remain balanced, engaging many more muscles. Those muscles become stronger over time to keep balance. Most frequently, the core body muscles — the abdominal muscles and back muscles — are the focus of exercise ball fitness programs.
LeBarre— Basic, Intermediate, Advanced. Taking the hottest trend in dance-inspired conditioning, ballet barre training, and using “make-sense progression” and the LeBert Equalizer to create a format suitable for every level of exerciser. LeBARRE is a workout like no other! This format combines Balance, Agility, Resistance, Working Recovery and Eloquence into a challenging full body workout.
INTERMEDIATE & ADVANCED:
PiYo— Intermediate, Advanced. PiYo is a hybrid, athletic workout, which combines the mind/body practices of Yoga & Pilates with the principles of stretch, strength training, conditioning & dynamic movement.
Step— Intermediate, Advanced. A form of aerobic power distinguished from other types of aerobic exercise by its use of an elevated platform (the step). The height can be tailored to individual needs by inserting risers under the step.
Kettlebell— Intermediate, Advanced. A cast-iron weight (resembling a cannonball with a handle) used to perform ballistic exercises that combine cardiovascular, strength and flexibility training.
KickBox MixUp— Intermediate, Advanced. The techniques used during the one-hour classes are based on authentic kickboxing techniques which provide both resistance training and cardiovascular benefits to its participants.
Tabata & Tabata/Strength— Intermediate, Advanced. Training in high intensity interval training improves aerobic systems as well as anaerobic system. 20 sec HI, 10 sec rest, repeat…
Ripped— Intermediate, Advanced. Experience this total body “plateau proof fitness formula” workout, utilizing resistance and cardio training, which masterfully combines Resistance, Intervals, Power, Plyometrics, Endurance, and Diet components of R.I.P.P.E.D. to help you attain and maintain your physique in ways that are fun, safe, doable and extremely effective.

Denise Oliver has opened FitZone for Women in Mattawan to help! They are the only gym in this area for women only! Most importantly, they are here to help women stay on track and have fun while doing it! They are located right off of I94 across from Chinn Chinn next to Family Dollar. It’s easy to get to and they have plenty of class times to work into your schedule!

About 6 years ago, I walked into a FitZone for Women in the area inquiring about teaching for them. The warm, comforting atmosphere drew me in. Members were smiling, laughing, networking with each other. I told myself, “I will own one of these gyms one of these days.” It was like a family there and I wanted to create that atmosphere in my gym! Feel free to come in and check us out!
I have been a Group Exercise instructor for over 15 years. I have worked in gyms all over the area. I love working with women on their fitness goals. But it’s not just about the exercise! We need time for ourselves! It’s the opportunity for women to bond with other local women. Lifelong friendships will be made here. Business relationships established here and all while having just plain fun and getting fit! We are the only gym to offer FREE child care while you are taking one of our classes! Chris has been teaching group exercise classes since 1999. She first certified through NETA and later through AFAA. She has certified at one time or another in group exercise, Stability Ball, spinning, weight training, personal training, Silver Sneakers, and YogaFit-Level 2. She has worked with populations of all ages and ability levels in three states. Chris loves helping people learn to love themselves as they are, while they’re seeking to improve their quality of life.
In her non-fitness life, Chris works full-time at the Kalamazoo Nature Center and is a single mom of two awesome teenagers. She is excited to be teaching some classes here at FitZone!
My journey to fitness has been an exciting one. In May of 2011 at the age of 43, I had a heart attack. I was 359 lbs. In December 2011 at my yearly physical, I was diagnosed with diabetes, high blood pressure, edema in my lower extremities and sleep apnea. I was told that if I did not change my health, I would most likely be dead by 50. I went home and cried. I realized that I hadn’t even been to the rec room in my lower level of my house because I could not climb the stairs. In fact, I had actually pulled the banister out of the wall from using it as a tow rope.
I decided I had to change if I wanted to see my son grow up. In January 2012, I gave up soda, sugar, fried foods and fast foods. I decided to have bariatric surgery. After my surgery in April of 2012, I joined a gym. I started working out regularly and haven’t looked back. I became a spokesperson and mentor for the Bronson bariatric program. I wanted to pay it forward to others who are struggling with their weight. I received my certification as a Personal Trainer from the American Council of Exercise in August 2013. I became a Tabata Bootcamp instructor in December 2013. I am currently pursuing my Health and Wellness Coaching certification. I have lost a total of 209 lbs and no longer have any of my previous health issues. I look forward to helping you reach your health goals!

Ruth graduated in April 2013 from WMU with a bachelor’s degree in Exercise Science and has been teaching group fitness since 2011. In addition, she also works as a wellness coach in the area and is a certified personal trainer. She loves mixing it up with anything fun, from hiking to martial arts to running to yoga to dancing with friends!
Anita has been teaching group exercise classes since 2001. She’s certified through AFAA (Aerobics and Fitness Association of America) and has been teaching various step, conditioning, and Pilates-style classes. In 2006, she took YogaFit’s Level 1 training and started on a new fitness journey — to become a registered yoga teacher (RYT). She’s been teaching yoga and taking additional trainings since then and achieved her RYT-200 hour certification in 2013.
Anita and her husband, Ron, have made Michigan their home since 2000. They have two daughters, ages 12 and 9. They are an active family…participating in triathlons, running races, gymnastics, and ice skating…just to name a few. Anita also works full time as a Safety & Health Professional. She’s found that exercise, especially yoga, helps to bring a sense of “balance” to this busy life. Sharing this experience with others through group exercise classes is one more great benefit. The “balance” also literally helps to continue to try new arm balances and gymnastics skills. Anita’s looking forward to help FitZone Women find that “balance” too.
Hi! My name is Erin. I’ve been a licensed Zumba Instructor since December 2011. I have been teaching since February 2012. Zumba has helped me battle depression, anxiety, gain confidence and lose 100#. I am truly passionate about teaching the class, and I can’t wait to share some of that energy with all of you. I’ll see you soon!
Katie is a junior at Western Michigan University majoring in Exercise Science. She plans to continue on to Physical Therapy school after finishing her undergrad at WMU. Katie’s interests include figure skating, running, and health/fitness. Katie has been a competitive figure skater since she was 5 years old and is currently a member of the WMU synchronized skating team. She has competed in many 5k, 10k, and even half marathon races. Katie has a passion for not only achieving her own fitness goals, but also helping others to reach theirs!
Danielle has been a licensed Zumba instructor since August of 2013. She became an instructor after attending Zumba classes regularly for two years. During those two years Danielle lost forty pounds and started to enjoy working out. Danielle got licensed so that she could share her passion of Zumba with everyone she encountered, showing them that working out could become something that they look forward to daily. Come try a class and get lost in the music while burning those calories!
Ranae has been teaching group exercise classes for nearly 15 years. She has a degree in health management and has worked in all facets of health and wellness. Group exercise is her passion because she believes it brings people together for support and encouragement in staying healthy. Ranae moved here from Birmingham, AL in August 2013, yes, she is a true “southern girl” at heart!
Molly is a certified personal trainer specializing in functional strength and injury prevention. She is also a group fitness instructor certified in classical pilates and Silver Sneakers. Molly enjoys mountain biking, camping, and reading her Bible.
After taking Zumba Fitness classes from a few local instructors, I knew I had found a new passion. I started teaching Zumba in October of 2011 and it has been a life-changing experience. I am currently licensed to teach Zumba Fitness, Aqua Zumba, Zumba Sentao, Zumba Step, Zumba Kids and Zumba Kids Jr. I also enjoy spending time with my family, volunteer work and crafting.
Deana Kerschner has been active in the fitness industry for over 5 years. She teaches a wide variety of classes such as Tabata Bootcamp, R.I.P.P.E.D., R.I.P.P.E.D. 4 Kids, and total body workouts in many area gyms. She is an AFAA certified group exercise instructor and is also a certified Tabata Bootcamp Trainer. Deana also holds a Bachelors of Science in Nursing, has held management positions in that field. Combining her nursing background and fitness certifications allows Deana to bring a unique array of talent to the fitness industry. She has assisted her clients in successfully achieving their goals, from weight loss to increased energy and improved health levels.
Eleven years ago Deana began taking classes at a local gym and realized that her passion is helping others find their path to a healthier life. She has two children ages nine and eleven and is from Kalamazoo, Michigan. Teaching fitness classes fits well into her busy life. She is also a certified Master Lebarre, Leboot & LeHIIT trainer. She is excited to add these trainings to her regimen and bring them to the area gyms. Deana loves to make exercise fun and engaging for people. She feels that people are more likely to stick with their exercise programs if they are enjoying it!
My name is Alyce Hoffman. I have been married to my husband Gary for 25 years. We have a son named Matthew who will turn 20 next month. We also have a great Red Lab named Moose who is 12. We really enjoy our little family and have a lot of fun together. Our son will be getting married to a sweet girl sometime in the near future.
I collect anything moose, I think they’re cute creatures! I really enjoy making crafts and sewing. I have always loved little kids and enjoy taking care of them at Fit Zone and also at the YMCA. I’ve done this for many years.
Melissa started her fitness journey as a tennis player. She later became a high school tennis coach as well as a tennis instructor. Melissa first began Yoga 6 years ago and recently trained through YogaFit to become an instructor. She will complete her YogaFit Level 2 in May 2015.
Melissa brings 9 years of experience in health clubs as well as a passion for healthy living. She lives in Portage with her husband and three kids, ages 6, 4, and 19 mos. In her spare time she enjoys running, painting, sewing, and coffee with friends.
